“This Mortal Coil was not a band. Nor were they a clever Shakespearian moniker for a solo artist. Rather it was a unique collaboration of musicians recording in various permutations, the brainchild of 4AD kingpin Ivo Watts-Russell. The idea was to allow artists the creative freedom to record material outside of the realm of what was expected of them; it also created the opportunity for innovative cover versions of songs personal to Ivo. ” (in 4AD) 

Ao procurar a discografia de Cocteau Twins no início da década de 90 e com isso ao perceber melhor o que era a 4AD foi inevitável e, mais do que isso, imprescindível descobrir This Mortal Coil. Tem sido tema recorrente neste blog e no anterior, recorrente noutro(s) blog(s) (aqui, aqui e aqui - é só para atestar a minha sanidade mental ) e é um projecto no mínimo absolutamente singular. Se “Song to the siren” é uma pérola, se “Ivy and neet” sempre foi porto de abrigo para as minhas angústias e deprimências, a selecção de Kim Deal para a interpretação do sublime ”You and your sister” é genial. Mais do que isso, este tema interpretado naquela voz quase infantil e com um quê de sussurante faz no meu imaginário o match perfeito com a magia desse “whisper of a thrill”:
